Project Teams
The size of the project team depends upon a range of circumstances:
Size and complexity of the project.
Uniqueness of the project.
Funding of the team.
The timeframe of the project.
Project start date.
Clearly, the size of the team would differ from project to project, the project manager will at the start of the project, evaluate and approximate size of project team, this is to enable a budget cost to be developed to the project team.
An important team attitude is confidence. The development of a complex system presents tremendous challenges to a project team. Sometimes it can even feel like an act of faith. An enormous amount of detail is collected, analysed, organised, and assimilated into a functional "whole". On very large efforts, only a few key individuals may possess the total "big picture", and this may be at varying levels of completeness. This ambiguity can from time to time test the confidence of the project team members. Given these uncertainties, how does a team feel assured and confident of success throughout the process, and have this reflected in the individual team member attitudes?
However team members do require selection, which is undertaken as soon as the project definition and scope becomes clear, a full appraisal can be made using a work breakdown structure, thereby allocating project team members based upon the demands of the project and the using the 8/80 rule of thumb.
It is important to select the team members to meet the demand of the projects work load and requirements, this means making a comparison between the work in the WBS and the skill the team already have, if there is a skills hole, it will mean either employing an additional team member with the necessary skills, or employ a consultant. The first step is to undertake an audit, the steps to take are shown in the diagram.
Record your results in a table,a typical pro forma is shown below:
