摘要:The author finds out that foreignization is more popular than domestication in creating China English .There are various adaptations in China English, which are influenced by language-internal and language-external factors.
Chapterl Introduction
1.1 Background of the Present thesis
English has been the international language used for communication between people of different linguistic and cultural backgrounds. In the modern world, English is not only used by its native speakers, but also learned and used as the second language or foreign language around the world, which has made its non-native speakers outnumber its native speakers. According to Graddol.D(1999:2), there are over 1400 million people living in countries where English has official status and one fifth of the world's population speaks English to some level of competence.Stockwell.P (2002:20) points out that 20070 of the world's population take English as the L1 or L2 and a further 4_507o take English as an important language in their lives.The international popularity of English not only reflects by the number of its speakers, but also its important role in the international communication. English is not only one of the five official languages in the United Nations but also the working language in many world organizations as well as international academic and business communities. Crystal .D(2002:360) states that over 2/3 of the world's scientists write in English and 3/4 of the world's mail is written in English. Of all the information in the world's electronic retrieval system, 80070 is stored in English.The international popularity of English leads to its localization in different countries and regions. Kachru.B.B (1982:23) holds the view that once English is adopted in a region, whether for science, technology, literature, prestige, elitism ormodernization, it goes through a reincarnation process, which is unique to another culture. When the non-native English users use the English language in a region or country, they will find that native English is unable to express the uniqueness in its own specific culture. Therefore, English language need be changed and varied to fit the given culture. Strevens.P (1982:21)states that under this situation, English-using communities develop "localized forms of English". Such localization of language is actually the "nativization" of English language, which is the result of language contact and change. The nativization of English leads to the development of various varieties of English reflecting the local cultures around the world.With its distinctive "chineseness", China English is an important English variety. It reflects the specific Chinese culture and serves as the tool to introduce Chinese culture to the rest of world. In the past several decades, China and spread has greatly enhanced its national strength after the implementation of reform and opening-up policy, which leads to its increasing status at the international stage. With the development of globalization, China has more opportunities to communicate with the outside world and people in the outside world are eager to know more about China and Chinese culture. Under this situation, China English is of increasing importance in the modern world.
