nd ofChinese people, as well as on the political, economic and cultural life of the country. It originates from the 6th century BC in China and it's traditionally traced to thecomposition of the Tao Te Ching《道德经》which is generally ascribed to the sageLaozi, a person who subsequently came to be venerated by Taoists as Daode Tianjun, one of three Taoist trinity gods?(高华平,2010) Taoism includes the philosophicaland religious traditions in which the basic concepts about Tao are shared. Bothtraditions are meant to establish harmony with the Tao, which is the mechanism ofeverything that exists. The basic ideas of Taoism are health, longevity immortality,non-action,and so on. Besides, the immortality belief is worth mentioning in Taoism. There is a system of Taoist immortals and deities from heaven, earth, mountains,The basic practice of Taoist cultivation is Chinese alchemy, which is thepurification of one's spirit and body in the hope of gaining immortality, through thecultivation of outer alchemy (waidan) which relies on the alchemical medicines orelixirs and internal alchemy (neidan) which focuses on the cultivation of humanbody. Then Neidan comprises the elixir from the cultivation of substances alreadypresent in the body,in particular the manipulation of three substances in the bodyknown as the Jmg,vital essence, qi vital energy, Shen, spirit (3长梦逍,2007) Amongthe theories of Chinese alchemy, yin and yang, five elements are the importantconcepts. The cyclical balance of the elements relates to the binary opposition ofyin-yang, and so it appears quite frequently in the practice of Taoist cultivation.BuddhismBuddhism is a religion and philosophy encompassing a variety of traditions, beliefs and practices, largely based on teachings attributed to Siddhartha Gautama(悉达多),commonly known as Shakyamuni (释迴牟尼)or the Buddha. TheBuddha lived and taught in the eastern part of Indian subcontinent some timebetween the 6^^ and 4^^ centuries BCE. Buddha(如来佛),four Bodhisattva (四大菩萨),Arhat(罗汉),Buddhist monks(头陀)are the main figures in Buddhism.According to the Prajnaparamita sutrcis{《般若波罗蜜多经》),the concept ofemptiness is one of the systematic expositions of Buddhist philosophy. It means allphenomena (dharmas) are without its own-nature or self-nature,and thus withoutany underlying essence; they are "empty" of being independent. And Prajna (般若)isthe wisdom that is able to extinguish afflictions and bring about bodhi. It is spokenof as the principal means of attaining Nirvana, through its revelation of the truenature of all things as unsatisfactoriness, impermanence and not-self.(吉布,2010)The entry of Buddhism into China (in Eastern Han period) was marked byinteraction and syncretism with Taoism in particular. Originally seen as a kind of"foreign Taoism",Buddhism had its scriptures translated into Chinese using theTaoist vocabulary. Chan Buddhism was particularly shaped by Taoism, integratingscripture, text and even language,as well as the Taoist views of embracing "this life”,dedicated practice and the "going with the flow". In the Tang period Taoismincorporated such Buddhist elements as monasteries, vegetarianism, prohibition ofalcohol, the doctrine of emptiness, and collecting scripture into tripartiteorganization. After the Mid-Ming dynasty, Confucianism, Taoism and Buddhismeventually reconciled after centuries of conflict and assimilation and became theunity of three religions.(杜继文,2006)
