1.1 Background of the study研究背景

Hence, the improvement and perfection ofrelated law system is imminent; on the other hand, it becomes very common forforeigners appearing in Chinese court as legal participant. If a litigant doesn't knowChinese, then court interpreter is a necessary part in court. Thus people have paid moreattention to court interpreter these years.Court interpreter is different from the general translator, for court interpreter standsfor authority, fairness, equality and justice of a court. However, studyof court interpreter in China is still at start. We don't know how to choose and hire acourt interpreter, for we don’t have relative regulations to define the qualifications for acourt interpreter, the nature of court interpreter and operation process of courtinterpretation. There are only some fundamental requirements for court interpreter inrelevant Chinese law.The purpose of this thesis is to study and analyze the role of court interpreter inChina through translation skopostheory, and to introduce the current situation of courtinterpretation in China faithfully and all-rounded; on the other hand, to develop newdomain in court interpreter study and call for more attention to court interpreter.

1.2 Rationale and Significance of the Study研究意义和方向
There are two reasons in writing this thesis: First, due to the increasinginterchanges of culture and economy between China and the outside world after China’saccession to the WTO, court interpreter become an essential part in China, and thedemand for court interpreter is larger and larger because there are more and moreforeign-related civil cases and criminal cases in China in recent years. On the other hand,the study of court interpreter in China is few whereas the study of legal translation isabounding. Study of court interpreter can help defend rights and interests for the partiesin foreign-related cases. Court interpreter is a profession asks for the combination of lawand linguistics both in theories and in practice. Therefore, the study of court interpreteris necessary and we need to understand the role of court interpreter better.Second, few do the study of court interpreter through translation theories whilemany through case analyzing or information processing.
