Translation of Tang poetryserves as a gateway for the whole world to the profound history and extensiveculture of Chinese peak periods in ancient times.The 6thPlenary Session of the 17thCPC Central Committee points out efforts mustbe made in promoting the development and prosperity of Chinese culture, andenhancing national soft power of culture. Culture manifests the spirit and charm ofthe country, serving as a driving force for national development and revitalization.As carrying forward traditional culture has been put on China’s political agenda, it isof great consequence for translators to be engaged in the translation of Tang poetrythat embodies the quintessence of Chinese culture.As a matter of fact, translation of Tang poetry is a kind of work that has to be donewhile it would be best not to be done. There is an ocean of differences between twopoetic languages, and the wording, syntax and subtleness of meanings are obstacleshard for one to go over. Thus, a practical and viable translation strategy fortranslating Tang poetry cannot be overemphasized. In China, a multitude of scholarshave put in a great deal of effort to make research on techniques and strategies fortranslating classical Chinese poems English, Tang poetry in particular. However,most researches are confined to Yan Fu’s translation criterion — “faithfulness,expressiveness, gracefulness”, Functional Equience, literal translation or freetranslation.Unlike other translation strategies, Philosophical Hermeneutics, especially “fusionof horizons”, will overemphasize neither the original poems nor the translated ones.Although it stresses the importance of the original poem, it also puts forward thattranslators’ “fore-understanding” and TL readers’ acceptability of English versionsare critical to the success of translation. The “fusion of horizons” advocates strikinga balance of relations among original texts, historical and cultural backgrounds,poets, translators, translated poems, TL readers, culture and history.
