      Chapter 1 Introduction引言

  1.1 The Hymn
What is a hymn?A hymn is a song, sung particularly to God. It is mainly about the praise andworship of Him. The word “hymn” derived from the ancient Greek  μνο , or hymnos, meaning “a song of praise”. The hymn is usually sung in the church, during theworship and also before the preaching by the priests. To cite a definition by EskewMcElrath, “…a hymn is a lyric poem, reverently and devotionally conceived, which isdesigned to be sung and which expresses the worshipper's attitude toward God orGod's purposes in human life. It should be simple and metrical in form, genuinelyemotional, https://www.51lunwen.org/yywxlw/ poetic and literary in style, spiritual in quality, and in its ideas so direct andso immediately apparent as to unify a congregation while singing it". (Eskew &McElrath, 1980: 3) The History of the HymnThe praise song to God has long been sung even in the far ancient times. In OldTestament times of the Holy Bible, there are the records of the development of thetradition of singing hymns to God. In Genesis 4:21, it says, “his brother’s name wasJubal; he was the father of all those who play the lyre and pipe.” (中华基督教协会,2008: 7) However, as it mentions no sign of singing to God, plus Jubal was thedescendant of Cain who sinned by killing his brother and was punished by God, it isunknown whether Jubal played for his own fun or for God. But that is the earliestrecord of music. Later, there was also the songs by Moses and the mass, to God, asrecorded in the Song of Moses in Exodus 15: 1-18(ibid: 109). This can be consideredrecordedly the first song sung to God in praise, i.e. the first hymn. After this, Mosessung again later in his life in Deuteronomy 32: 1-43 (ibid: 328) and another twopeople sung also in praise of God in the Song of Deborah and Barak in Judges 5:1-31.(ibid: 386) Even though, the hymnology did not form as a tradition until the times ofKing David when he “commanded the chiefs of the Levites to appoint their brother asthe singers who should play loudly on musical instruments, on harps and lyres andcymbals, to raise sounds of joy.” (1 Chronicles 15: 16) Since then, singing in praise ofGod has become a part of the worship to God in the Jewish people’s life, whilespecifically to the exclusive right of the Levites in worship who used to be in chargeof the priests’ work.In the New Textament times, the churches of Christ were built and everyone whoclaimed to be a follower of him could be a priest himself. So people began to singhymns too, with the first recorded hymn singing led by Jesus Christ himself asMatthew 26:30 puts it, “And when they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mountof Olives.” (New Testament: 51) It can also be found in Mark 14: 26 in the exact word.(ibid: 88) Besides, after Jesus died on the cross, rose from the dead and went to theheaven, his followers also sung in their daily life as recorded in Acts 16:25, “Aboutmidnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisonerswere listening to them”. (ibid: 234) All these records show hymn singing has becomean important part of the Christian’s religi论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
