In China, although various theories including the Skopostheorie arewidely used in film subtitle translation researches, those on documentary subtitletranslation are rare, particularly for C-E translation and there is almost no such entryin CNKI from 1978 to date. Therefore, a systematic research of documentary subtitletranslation is of great significance.Research QuestionsThis thesis further interprets the Skopostheorie and uses it as a guideline toexplore documentary subtitle translation in the hope of gaining a better understandingof the following research questions and making a little contribution to this field.(1) What are the features that distinct documentary subtitle translation from othertypes of audiovisual translation?(2) What are the determining factors and constraints of documentary subtitletranslation?(3) To what extent can the Skopostheorie be further interpreted and applied todocumentary subtitle translation?(4) What should be the translation principles and strategies for documentarysubtitle translation, concluded from this research?(5) How much can a documentary help promote a country’s culture to the world?(6) How well the subtitle translation of Mystery of the Royal Tomb under thefurther interpreted Skopostheorie is being received by the foreign audience?methodology and Research MaterialsIn order to answer the research questions, this thesis mainly adopts qualitativemethod supported by survey analysis, and the procedure is designed as follows.First, read and summarize domestic and foreign researches on documentarysubtitle translation, evaluate those researches and specify the research focus.Meanwhile, review the Skopostheorie and try to figure out the advantages anddisadvantages of applying the theory to translating documentary subtitles.Second, probe into documentaries and subtitle translation by reading relevantbooks, essays and watching documentaries of various kinds. Identify the features thatdistinct documentary translation from other types of audiovisual translation.Third, further interpret the Skopostheorie by putting forward a new rule to makeit more applicable to documentary subtitle translation. In this step, induction will beused to summarize translation briefs, principles and strategies for documentarysubtitles. Then deduction will be employed to apply the principles and strategies toaddressing concrete translation problems.Last but not least, evaluate the translation by various means such as searching theviews of the chief editor, designing receptivity survey and analyzing the survey resultsof the overseas audience. The goal is to examine the audience’s receptivity towardsthe abovementioned principles and strategies. And after all these have been done,draw a conclusion about findings, significance, limitations and suggestions.The research materials for this thesis are Chinese domestic historical and culturaldocumentaries produced by CCTV-9 and CCTV-4. Out of a wide range ofdocumentaries, the following nine documentaries are selected as research materials.
