摘要:Translation is generally agreed as an intercultural communication activity inwhich one language is transcoded into another. Chapter 2 Literature Review


2.1 The Concept of Cohesion
In recent years, more and more scholars have chosen a text linguistic approach totranslation studies. Text linguists contend that a text meets seven standards oftextuality: cohesion, coherence, intentionality and acceptability, informativity,situationality, intertextuality. As the first of the seven standards, cohesion should bepaid enough attention to both the ST (Source Text) and the TT (Target Text).Cohesion, according to Halliday and Hasan, considered as a semantic concept,refers to relations of meaning that exist within the text,and that defines it as a text. Inother words, cohesion, what we might call relations or ties in the discourse, to someextent create a text one of whose typical features is cohesion other than separatedsentences. Practically any two sentences in a text might be shown to have somethingto do with each other as far as their meaning is concerned, although we could not giveany explicit account of the degree of relatedness. "What cohesion has to do with is theway in which the meaning of the elements is interpreted. Where the interpretation ofany item in the discourse requires making Reference to some other item in thediscourse, there is cohesion." (Halliday and Hasan) Therefore, we can say that thewriter requires the reader to interpret words and expressions by reference to otherwords and expressions in the adjacent sentences and paragraphs. Thus, it is cohesionthat holds words or expressions that we can see or hear together.
And British scholar Mona Baker defined cohesion as follows; The network oflexical, grammatical and other relations which provide links between various parts ofa text. These relations or ties organize, and to some extent create a text. Consequently,it is generally agreed that cohesion helps create a text by providing surface linksbetween the meanings within a text.Sentences of a text are related to each other by cohesion and the sequence of thesentences cannot be disturbed without destroying or radically altering the meaning.When we consider cohesion, we are investigating the cohesive relations within meaning in a text.


2.2 Overview of Cohesion Theories
Halliday created the terminology of coherence in 1962,which received fiirtherimprovement as Halliday-Hasan model in 1976. Halliday-Hasan model classified thetypes of cohesion into two groups: the grammatical and the lexical. It also identifiedfive cohesive devices, namely,reference, substitution and ellipsis which belong to thegrammatical group, and conjunction and lexical cohesion making up the lexical group.Those five forms of cohesive devices play a vital role in creating text by providingtexture,or we can say continuity from one part to another.
