摘要:Translation is generally agreed as an intercultural communication activity inwhich one language is transcoded into another. During the translating process,forexample, English to Chinese translation, many people will find it difficult to organizethe pieces of information in the source text into the target text.

monstrative reference in strict accordance to thedenotative meaning in distance, time, and space and order while Chinese usuallyfavors the proximal demonstrative “这”.What's more,the definite article "the” isalso usually translated into “这”.Second, English prefers to use substitution and ellipsis to avoid repetition so asto make the text coherent and concise. Repetition in English is usually intentional andfor rhetorical purpose. Chinese, on the other hand, favors to repeat lexical items andsyntactic patterns to form cohesion.Third,English uses a lot of explicit conjunctions while Chinese chooses implicitconjunctions.
It is admitted that this thesis still leaves great room for deeper exploration apartfrom its findings. First, the theoretical framework adopted in this thesis is onlylimited to the study of Halliday and Hasan. Cohesion,as Baker (2000:211) said, isalso achieved by a variety of devices other than those we have mentioned. Theseinclude, for instance, continuity of tense, consistency of style and punctuation deviceslike colons and semi-colons which, like conjunctions indicate how different parts ofthe text relate to each other. But due to the limit of space, energy and time, this thesishas just scratched the surface of use of cohesion and can only serve as a base for moredetailed researches on this subject. Second, this paper is also just a tentative step inintroducing the sense of cohesion to college English teaching and learning. Practice isthe sole criterion for testing the truth. Although theoretically cohesion can helpimprove students' translation skills, experimental researches are still needed to affirmthis theory so as to benefit more teachers and students.To sum up, although the contrastive study of cohesive devices in translationfrom English to Chinese pose great difficulties to researchers, it's worthy of theefforts for it will not only improve the quality of translations but may also helpcollege students to learn English in a more efficient way.
