1.1 Research Background
Self-translation is a very unique activity in translation field. According to the records,in the 16"， century, European poets who were educated exclusively in Latin, sometimestranslated their Latin writings into their mother language as finger exercises. This mightbe the first sprout of self-translation (Hokenson & Munson, 2007). Self-translation wenton incessantly, but on a small scale. It is not until the 20^^ century when great figures asJoseph Brodsky, Vladimir Nabokov and Samuel Beckett appeared that this activityreached a high tide. In some places self-translating has been popular to some extentbecause of the coexistence of two or three languages. Canada is the very place where alarge number of self-translators and bilingual writers showed up. In fact, most of theself-translations existing today are between homogenous languages, for instance, betweenEnglish and German, French and German, etc.. Because these languages belong to thesame language family, Indo-European family, so, to some extent, they share somesimilarities; while between Chinese and English, there are not so many self-translations,mostly due to the vast differences between them. Another possible reason may be that inChina, unlike India, English has never been adopted as an official language.Self-translation is not a field that has gained rich harvest of theoretical achievements.

For a long time, despite of its long history, self-translation has not been taken seriously.There are at least two reasons for the neglect.First, most obviously, the keepers of the canon rather strenuously insisted on the linguisticpurity of its foundational figures, such as Chaucer and Dante, and they routinely ignored the founder's youthful translations of foreign texts...Second, concerning self-translation, theneglect of the bilingual text in translation theory as well as critical history stems rather moredirectly from the fact that the conceptual problems are daunting (Hokenson & Munson, 2007，For a long time, self-translation has been neglected by scholars for its similarities aswell as differences with conventional translation. Because the translator is also the author,so many scholars views self-translation as a kind of bilingual writing instead of translation.Grutman (1998) mentions the case of Belgium, in which a great number of self-translatorsappeared. But these self-translators were rarely acknowledged. However, in recent years,self-translation has attracted attention from more and more researchers. In 2002, a seminar,named American Comparative Literature Association Annual Conference, on"Self-translation & Translation and Self was organized by Scheiner. In 2006, apostgraduate symposium, "Self & Identity in translation", was held in UK. In thesymposium, many problems about self-translation were discussed, for example, how areidentity and the self manifested in self-translation?
