摘要：本文主要目的在于分析跨文化因素在陪同口译过程中的重要性以及提出有效的口译策略以达到更好的文化交流效果。根据自己在第二届鄂尔多斯国际那达慕大会上的陪同口译经验和对于蒙古族文化的了解，笔者分析了内蒙古地区的特殊文化背景，尤其是翻译蒙古族文化意象词时给口译员带来的理解障碍，并提出了行之有效的解决方案。

Chapter Five How to improve the interpreter’s intercultural awareness

5.1 Improving the Study of Foreign Culture

The importance of studying foreign culture as a part of training interpreters hasbeen widely proved, that’s why it’s common to witness that many universities haveprovided related courses like introduction to American & British & Canadian Culture,American & British Literature. Studying these courses will help escort interpretersdeepen the understanding of other cultures and understand better of the original texts.However as the development of society, people’s views and lifestyles are changing allthe time. An escort interpreter has to keep up with the changing mode of culture.Therefore, one needs to improve his/her cross-cultural ability by reading extensivelylatest magazines and newspapers.

5.2 Improving the Study of Mother Culture

One necessity training of competent escort interpreter is their deep understandingof their mother culture. Because as cross-cultural mediators, escort interpreters findmost of the time introducing their mother culture to the foreigners. This task could notbe fulfilled if the escort interpreter lacks the essential knowledge about his/her ownmother culture. Many interpreters are foreign language major, somehow theygradually forget to read their mother language’s books which would lead to theinterpreting failures. Intensifying the learning of mother culture will also help theescort interpreters to get to know the world and will provide a frame of reference forhis/her comprehensions of the world.

5.3 Improving the Study of Cultural Comparison

An escort interpreter would meet many interpreting difficulties which arebrought by cultural differences, thus one has to develop cross-cultural awareness.Knowledge of foreign cultures and mother culture is the basis for cultivatinginterpreter’s cross-cultural awareness. An efficient way to improve cross-culturalawareness is to constantly compare different cultures in various aspects. One cancompare and analyze the different connotation meanings of colors words, animalwords, numbers etc. For example, in Mongolian culture, blue color “Hoh” symbolizes“forever, dignity, grave”.
