摘要:The global village is now becoming smaller and smaller, and people on the earth long for knowing more about each other’s culture. Concededly, literary translation is the most widely accepted means to promote cultural communication between the East and the West.

Ⅰ.Introduction
With frequent cultural exchange all over the word now, translation study tends to be viewed from cultural perspective. And literary translation plays such an important role in cultural exchange and transmission. But what is the nature of literary translation and how to translate literary works with high quality? For translator, it has to answer these questions first. Xu Yuanchong, in his book Art of Translation, points out that “the nature of literary translation is to reproduce the original content in the target language form after an understanding of the original content, and that the translator should translate not only the words, but also the meaning and flavor” (许渊冲,1984:128). And it must focus on cultural differences in literature if the translator wants to translate literary works with high quality. Just as Nida said,“people become so accustomed to their ways of doing things that they cannot conceive of other people accomplishing the same purpose by quite different actions”(1933:11). Cultural differences will necessarily bring about cultural interferences, which often lead to the failure or discontinuance in cross-cultural communication. And the translator should overcome these barriers in literary translation caused by cultural differences, including different historical backgrounds, different geographic positions, different thinking patterns and so on.
Foreignization and domestication are considered as the main strategies in dealing with cultural differences in literary translation. The two strategies have a long history, and both Chinese and foreign translators have had heated debate over the question of which should be taken to translate literary works. Foreignizing strategy introduces relatively new and unfamiliar features into the target culture, making the reader see cultural differences. Domesticating strategy suppresses cultural differences of the source text and assimililates it to dominant values in the target language culture, making it recognizable and seemingly untranslated. However, whichever of them can solve the problem of cultural differences only distingushed by the attitude of dealing with the cultural difference. Despite both of them have advantages, it should be too extreme to take either of them solely to settle the cultural difference. The translator should select a better strategy—foreignization or domestication, according to practical situation in order to let readers comprehend the content of works as well as cultural information in it.

Ⅱ.Literary Translation
Translation is roughly divided into literary translation and non-literary translation. And literary translation is rather different from non-literary translation, such as Science and technology translation. Literary translation is an art of language, and has its own unique characteristics. It loads plenty of cultural information and cultural differences. So it could say that literary translation is more difficult than non-literary translation. In his report“Strive for the Development in the Cause of Literary Translation and the Impovement of Translation Quality”, Mao Dun points out that “literary translation is to reproduce the original artistic images in another language so that the reader of the translation may be inspired, moved and aesthetically entertained in the same way as one reads the original.”(罗新璋, 1984:511)
