With the booming of Chinese economy, the interaction and dialogue betweenChina and other nations have become even more frequent. During this process,interpreting plays a critical role, because the successful carrying on the interpretingpractice is closely connected to a business success or a nation’s fame and reputation.Interpreting is not only a language activity but also a cultural one. It is actually across-cultural communication process. Every country has their own unique culturalfeatures and they show it in different ways. Even in the same country, people fromdifferent areas or different ethnic groups have their unique cultural images. As aninterpreter, one needs to notice these cultural differences and their effects oncommunication. Only through consistently cultivate his/her cross-cultural awarenesscan the interpreters successfully accomplish his/her interpreting tasks.Established on May 1, 1947, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region as a specialadministrative region in China has some unique cultural characteristics compared withother regions. As one of the biggest ethnic minorities in China, the Mongol has beenknown as a “nation on the horse back”. With its unique culture and hospitality, theMongol’s way of life has been so mysterious that many foreigners want to explore thismagical land. On August 27, 2012, the 2ndOrdos International Nadam Fair was heldat the Yijin Horo Banner of Inner Mongolia. With the support of Central Government,this ethnic fair has reached international level and has attracted sports delegationsfrom more than 40 countries. It showed the authentic Mongol culture to the world.With the fast development of this region, more and more international events aretaking place in this beautiful land. Therefore, more and more interpreting works aboutthe Mongolian culture and about the region will be needed. However, because of itsunique culture, a lot of culture-specific terms are hard to understand, let aloneinterpret. Thus through the analysis of cultural differences between Mongolian specialculture and other cultures (mainly Han nation and Western cultures), this thesisproposes some useful coping strategies in interpreting Mongolian cultural-specificterms. In the end, the author gives three suggestions in improving interpreter’scross-cultural awareness in escort interpreting, hoping that this would be useful forinterpreters when dealing with obstacles caused by cultural differences.
