摘要:本土译者追求气韵、神似的翻译倾向一定程度上弥补了西方译者准确有余、而气韵不足的翻译缺点。最终,本文认为,还原一个真正意义上的陶渊明诗文,需要中外译者共同努力,相互补偿。
theforeign translators perfectly demonstrate the process of coming closer to the originalacross a much longer period of time. Either in the selection of works, theunderstanding of meaning, or the representation of ideas, there is the process ofapproaching adequacy in its own sense. The accumulated effect is a graduallycomplete image of the poet and his overall value. In the process, T’ao Yuanming evolves from an ideal hermit as presented byWaley to a real man of sorrow and happiness as presented by Acker, Hightower andDavis. The poet no longer stands aloof from the bitter struggle of world, but getsinvolved in it. He suffers conflicting impulses and attitudes, he has concerns overpragmatic issues, and he also espouses quietist ideals. This complexity is the genuinereflection of the man and of his individuality. Then, in Hightower’s translation, thepoet evolves from a sole Confucian enthusiast as displayed by Acker to a philosophercrystallizing and innovating ideas that are suitable in other places and occasions. Thepoet’s hidden political intentions also get emerged, which resonates to the ambitiousside of the poet. In Davis’s translations, new insights are added and the abundantcultural and historical backgrounds are also exposed, telling a more detailed story ofthe poet and his time.Nevertheless, due to the engrained Western ideology, foreign translators’interpretation of T’ao is still sort of partial. Their interpretative basis of keeping to thesurface of language also results in the loss of spirit and charm to the original. Incontrast, domestic translators such as Tan Shilin and Wang Rongpei spare no efforts ingetting the essence and spirit of the original while at the same time reproduce them innatural language so as to reflect the simplicity and profundity of the poet. This is notsaying that being free is superior to being literal in poetry translation. The fact thatacademic requirements and poetry criteria cannot be both taken into full account inpoetry translation does not negate the possibility of co-existence and inter-supplement.When literal translation exhibits the cultural and academic side of the poem, freetranslation can help to display its literary side. Whether academic or literary, they areboth the components of the original. In the end, to restore a true T’ao Yuanming needs the supplementary efforts ofdomestic scholars. By reproducing simple yet vivid language, steering betwixt thestate of “with me” and “without me”, and compensating with rhymes, domestictranslators can help to reveal the literary value of the poet, which can further facilitatethe understanding of the poet’s character.Limitation of the paper lies in that studies conducted into the changes of Englishtranslations of T’ao and his personal image are far from comprehensive. On the onehand, the process of coming closer to the original is only a trend instead of anabsolute reality, and on the other, the change of image is mainly detected from thestudy of annotations rather than the study of foreign readers’ real impressions. What ismore, domestic scholars certainly can do more to remedy T’ao’s image besides thethree measures listed above. It is the hope of the author that this
thesis could providesome room for future discussion.
