2.2 Ren’s Adaptation in the Translation Process

Eco-translatology is developed from the theory of translation as adaption andselection, which determines its particular stress on the degree of holistic adaptationand selection. As a translator-centered approach to translation, eco-translatologydefines translation as “cyclical altemations of translator’s adaptation and selection” ina translational eco-environment, which indicates that the translator’s adaptation andselection activities run through the whole translation process. In fact,eco-translatology applies the fundamental principle of natural selection (or thesurvival of the fittest) in Darwin’s theory of biological evolution into translationstudies, which means that a translator (translation) should adapt and be subject to thetranslational eco-environment. Only a translator sufficiently adapts himself or herselfto every element in the translational eco-environment and make proper selectionaccordingly, can his or her translation survive in the natural competition of translationworld. Therefore, the translation process is composed of two major steps: the first isselective adaptation; and the second is adaptive selection. In this sense, Ren’stranslation activities, together with his personal development, are the result of his“adaptation” and “selection”.
