rts and Letters, the National Medal for Literature, thePresidential Medal of Freedom and (in 1973) was elected to the American Academyof Arts and Letters. Apart from all his accomplishments in
essay writing, he alsowrote three children’s classics Stuart Little, Charlotte’s Web, and The Trumpet of theSwan, which won him worldwide reputation in the world of children’s literature andwas called “the most widely read and beloved fairytales of the 20thcentury”. Hiscreation of the three famous stories is inspired by his childhood when he liked to staywith animal and his fascination with the simple but touching rural life. In 1970, hewon the Laura Ingalls Wilder Medal, honoring authors or illustrators who have made“a lasing and substantial contribution to children’s books.”His first children’s book Stuart Little was published in 1945, telling a realisticand fantasy story about a talking mouse and his pursuit. According to E.B. White, thislovely and courageous small leading character had appeared in his mind twenty-twoyears early before the final publication of the book. Stuart’s journey symbolizespeople’s constant life travel in the real world—pursuing something perfect but hard toobtain. As in the story, the most beautiful thing for Stuart to seek is the bird Margalo.Since its publication, Stuart Little have been warmly welcomed by children readersand in 1999, it was adapted for a movie of the same title, co-acted by acomputer-generated mouse and real people, which received a terrific response fromthe audiences.recognized as his master work of children’s literature and according to the readershipsurvey conducted by Publishers Weekly, it ranks first in the list of “American Top TenChildren’s Literature”. The story is about a pig called Wilbur and his friendship with abarn spider Charlotte. E.B.Whiteendows this simple story with profound philosophy of love, friendship, life and death, which appeals to not only the children readers, but also the adult readers. The Trumpet of the Swan (1970) is E.B. White’s last work of children’s literature, which narrates us the story of a voiceless Trumpeter Swan named Louis. In order toovercome the hardships caused by his inborn physiological defect, Louis under thehelp of Sam learns how to read, write and play a trumpet. Through endless efforts,Louis finds true love with a beautiful pen Serena and lives a happy life. Thissuccessful children’s book received two awards, one is the Sequoyah Award fromOklahoma and the other is the William Allen White Children’s Book Award fromKansas. Though The Trumpet of the Swan is less widely read today than his StuartLittle and Charlotte’s Web, American contemporary great writer Johan Updike oncewrite it “has superior qualities of its own and it is the most spacious and serene of thethree, the one most imbued with the author’s sense of the precious instinctual heritagerepresented by wild nature”. (Johan Updike, 1970)3.2 Translation Methods Reflected in Ren’s Chinese VersionsAt the beginning of 21stcentury, Ren Rongrong translated E.B.White’s threechildren’s classics.
