4.1 The Roles of Translators in Pun Translation in Literature
Undoubtedly, pun translation in literature is an important part of literaturetranslation. What does literary translator translate? The answer to this question seemsto be self-evident. It is the original text that is translated. Or rather, the original text isexpressed in another language through the translator’s efforts. In other words,translations are reproductions of the original text. Based on this opinion, traditionaltranslation theories seem to only pursue translators’ invisibility and ignore theirsubjective involvements in interpreting the original text. And some translationprinciples such as “Faithfulness, Expressiveness and Elegance”, “Transmigration” and“Equivalence” are presented based on this traditional notion, which may misleadtranslators to some extent and precipitates them into an awkward situation.However, the situation is changed by the emergence of Reception Aesthetics.According to this theory, a translator experiences two reception processes. The firstone is the communication between the translator and the original text. And the secondone is the communication or dialogue between target readers and the translation,which is realized only after the translation is finished. Therefore, it is easy to see thetranslators’ roles and importance in the process of translation. Generally speaking, atranslator plays triple roles in translating pun: as the reader of the original text, as thewriter of the target text as well as the creator of the target text.

The guiding values of Reception Aesthetics for the translator in pun translationcan be concluded into three aspects. the translator’s structure of pre-understanding or horizon of expectationsis absolutely vital for the reproduction of the text-meaning. In order to betterunderstand the original pun, the translator must pay much heed to hispre-understanding and try to gain insights into those contents underlying the pun suchas history, culture, custom and so on. Having sufficient pre-understanding structure orbackground knowledge is the necessary condition for the translator to translate pun. the relation between the original pun and the translator is dialectical.The translator can enjoy moderate freedom when interpreting and translating the pun.However, the freedom to create is limited because the translation must be inaccordance with the original pun.
