p;which is sung alongside musical instruments or without them. Despite the slightly difference among those definitions of songs, it’s very easy to see that the song is a unique form of art consisted of melody and lyric. They are complementary and indispensable parts in a song. The lyric is more accurate and direct in expression of the emotion while the music is free and lively. These two characteristics of songs imply that they express the explicit meaning with the artistic form. According to Wang Haoliang (1995), the relation between melody and lyric just like the song lyric borrows the wings from music and by riding on the back of the imaginative song lyric, thus music is capable of fly in a wider sky. 2.2 Characteristics of English Lyric
The characteristics of English lyric will be discussed to make the translator be aware of the unique features of them to make the translation successful. As a particular kind of literature, song lyrics should possess several characteristics which are shared with most of them like the other forms of literature. It is very easy to see that most English songs range from the three to six minutes. Comparing with a film or soap opera, the time is very limited. But during this short and limited time, songs are supposed to express the whole and complete meaning and image to the audience. The rhythm and song lyrics are blended together closely to achieve this goal. The melody can vividly and directly present the image and emotion to the audience. That’s to say, when the music starts, the audience is aroused by the melody first. However, the content of the English songs is in the lyrics. The English lyrics can tell the story and express the true and intended meaning of the English songs. Unlike the fiction which is written as a book, the English lyrics usually have a few sentences. To some extent, the lyricists are able to be regarded as the poets. All the poetry is not long and has concentrated words. Thus English lyrics are the same. Each line of them is short in form and generally doesn’t use complex sentence structure. For example in the famous English song Yesterday Once More, there is the lyric: When I was young, I’d listen to the radio. It is a simple and narrative sentence just to tell the audience the story long ago and it is very plain.
