3.1 The Picture of Dorian Gray and Its Two Chinese Versions
This part gives a brief introduction to Oscar Wilde and his novel The Picture ofDorian Gray and provides background information of the two Chinese versions byHuang Yuanshen and Wu Mengru in detail.

where he lived until his death in 1900.The synopsis of The Picture of Dorian Gray is the following: Dorian Gray, aplayboy with good looks and decent demeanor, often attracts and flirts with beautifulyoung ladies in daily life. Dorian magically keeps his lilies and roses, while hisportrait gradually becomes foul and ugly because of his heinous crimes. In the end, heand his portrait perish together in the extreme mental conflict. The plot is absolutelyabsurd—the protagonist tries to run after beauty and hedonism at the expense ofbetraying his soul and finally dies together with his portrait, which essentially impliesmoral concepts with symbolic meaning. This is one of the reasons why many peoplewould like to read the novel currently.Furthermore, the main reason why the present author intends to analyze thetranslation of this novel from the perspective of pragmatic equivalence is that thereare many pragmatic facts in the original text and the rendering of them has a greatinfluence on the quality of the whole translation and should be paid close attention inthe course of translation. The pragmatic facts in the novel are as follows: first of all,similar to other novels, The Picture of Dorian Gray is also full of characters’dialogues and situational contexts, which impel readers and translators to infer theimplied meaning of the utterances and the intention of the original author. In addition,cohesive devices used in the original text are connected with textual context andculture-loaded words or phrases with cultural context, all of which are supposed to betransferred in pragmatic approach by taking context and the writer’s intention intoconsideration.

CONCLUSION

The present thesis intends to conduct a comparative study of two Chineseversions of Wilde’s novel The Picture of Dorian Gray. Within the theoreticalframework of pragmatic approach to translation, the analysis of the examples selectedfrom the original and two translated versions demonstrates that achieving pragmaticequivalence is important in both linguistic and cultural levels in literary works.Especially when there are information gaps due to the differences between twolanguages and the discrepancies between two cultures, pragmatic approach issupposed to be carried out in understanding the original text and transferring theimplied pragmatic meaning in the translated text in virtue of different types of context.The part of case study examines two translators’ various techniques selection toachieve pragmalinguistic equivalence and socio-pragmatic e
