摘要：This thesis aims to study the translation of English long sentences into Chinese from acognitive perspective. It analyzes the base of the translation of English long sentences byobserving the generalization of construction chunks and the semantic relations amongchunks which are composed by constructions in and out of the clauses.

Chapter Two Literature Review

2.1 Studies on the Unit of Translation
When facing a given discourse, translators have to firstly analyze and apply certaintranslation unit. Study on the unit of translation is once a heated topic with a long history.Back in 1970s, a Soviet Union translation specialist gave a definition of translation unit, hesaid that the minimum unit of equivalence lying between source language and thetranslated version is called translation unit (Ba, 1985) and that the translation units aredivided into six levels, that is, phoneme, morpheme, word，phrase, sentence and discourse.Peter Newmark has similar view that the unit of translation is the smallest stretch oflanguage which needs to be translated as one union (2001). From his point of view, the unitof translation should have a moderate length and the appropriate unit of translation shouldbe sentence which is in coincidence with the opinion of Robins (2000) who holds thatsentences should be the minimum meaningful translation units since with a completesyntactic structure, a sentence can be used independently as a semantic stretch. However,difficulties in translating English long sentences arc easily found in a great many caseswhen applying sentences as translation units due to the differences among inner sentencestructures.

2.2 The Concept of Long Sentences in English
A sentence which contains several words, phrases or clauses so as to express complexideas can be a long sentence which is more often found in formal documents, scientific andliterary discourses. English long sentences are by nature an expansion of the simplesentence patterns added by modifiers, coordinate constituents, phrases constituents andsubordinations. (Chen Dezhang, 2011) For example, one subject-predicate structure isexpected to be seen in long simple sentence while at least two subject-predicate structurescan be applied in one long complex sentence.Divided by the standard of the formation of English long sentences, they can beclassified as long simple English sentence, long compound English sentence, long complexEnglish sentence and long complex-compound English sentence.If an English sentence contains only one subject-predicate structure and otherembedded modifiers, it can be called a long simple sentence. For example, “the hallwaywas large, dimly lit and sumptuously dccorated, with a magnificent carpet covering most ofthe stone floor.” Even though this sentence is long, it owns only one subject-predicatestructure so it is a long simple sentence.
