1.1 Objectives of the Study
Chapter One IntroductionEvery language system has its own syntactic features and, therefore, it comes as nosurprise that there are differences in the syntactic forms of English and Chinese. Forexample, generally more conjunctions, adverbials, and relative pronouns in particular, areused in constructing English sentences so that long and complicated ones are commonlyused. In Chinese, however, albeit long and complex sentences also abound, logic relationscan be implied by word order instead of overt connective devices. Because of this, Chineseis often referred to as a ‘paratactic’ language, while English, a ‘hypotactic’ one (LianShuneng, 2008, Nida, 1982). Consequently, the differences in syntactic forms, or thesemantic representations of the two languages can lead to difficulties in translating longsentences into each other. The procedures and techniques of translating English longsentences can be seen in translation textbooks (He Guoqian，1998, Huang Zhishun, 1995,Wang Tao, 2002) in which the process is analyzed from a syntactic perspective. Theconsensus view is that four major techniques can be applied in the translation process,namely sequential translation, reverse translation, split translation and the combinedmethod (Zhang Peiji, 2002). These studies have undeniably provided guidelines fortranslating English long sentences, but with the development of linguistics, the theoreticalbasis for translation techniques should also be expanded. In this study, the author aims toinvestigate the translation of English long sentences from a Construction Grammar (CG)perspective, based on the development in cognitive linguistics. The Construction Grammar account on English long sentences translation illustrates anew perspective on the process of English-Chinese translation. English long sentences aresurveyed from a cognitive perspective by analyzing the classification and generalization ofthe chunks defined under CG and the semantic relations among the constituents inside asentence.This thesis aims to find out the semantic relations among construction chunks for thepurpose of realizing English-Chinese long sentences translation by applying CG.

1.2 Significance of the Study
This thesis aims to study the translation of English long sentences into Chinese from acognitive perspective. It analyzes the base of the translation of English long sentences byobserving the generalization of construction chunks and the semantic relations amongchunks which are composed by constructions in and out of the clauses. The inner drive forthe existing translation techniques is analyzed and then the different translation techniquesare evaluated. This thesis aims to find out a new perspective to translate English longsentences. Besides, the study also has some instructive significance for theEnglish-Chinese translation practice. In addition, language learners can grasp and apply thetechniques of translation more efficiently with the knowledge of constructions and chunksfor the generalization of constructions can be learned during the process of languageacquisition.
