摘要:本文是英语翻译论文,The author adopted a quantitative research approach in the process of collectingC-E translation examples. The data analyzed in the thesis were selected frommainstream Chinese media.

rst laid on the phenomenon that in the process of translation from Chinese toEnglish, many words could not be translated due to the lack of cultural equivalents.Mr. Cheng Zhenqiu should be considered as one of the forerunners in this aspect, whohas published a book in 1981--On Problems of Translation--calling for more attentionon this phenomenon. In his book, Cheng gave several suggestions on how toappropriately translate Chinese featured vocabulary into English, of which the keywas to maintain faithful to the source culture. (Cheng Zhenqiu, 2003) Later, Mr. DuanLiancheng wrote an article, Appealing for More Attention on Publicity Materials,giving a more systematic classification of the problems emerged in the C-E translationprocess and the influencing factors of these problems. (Duan Liancheng, 1990) Someother scholars have also conducted research in the aspect of translation strategies forChinese featured vocabulary, and they mainly based their research on theSkopostheorie, such as Chen Xuexian, who wrote Strategies of C-E Translation in theForeign-Oriented Publicity Texts: A Perspective of Skopos Theory (Chen Xuexian,2008), and Li Yan, who wrote Factors and Strategies in C-E Translation of PoliticalPublicity—From the Perspective of Skopostheorie (Li Yan, 2010), and many otherslike Zhang Yan (Zhang Yan, 2011), Zhu Decai (Zhu Decai, 2010), etc. With moresignificance attached to Chinese featured vocabulary, more and more research weredone, for example, the articles named On C-E Translation of Words with ChineseCharacteristics in China’s Mainstream English Newspapers and Newsmagazines byLiao Yingying (Liao Yingying, 2008), China English and Translating Strategies forUnique Chinese Expressions with Domestication and Foreignization by Gao Yunwei(Gao Yunwei, 2009).

2.2Foreign Studies in C-E Translation Strategies
In the western academic field, the debate on translation strategies has beenunderway for a long period, while not as many foreign scholars did research ontranslation of unique Chinese words as the Chinese scholars.The debate over domestication and foreignization in the west could be tracedback to the argument over word-for-word translation and sense-for-sense translationproposed by Cicero, Horace and St. Jerome in the ancient Rome (Wang Dongfeng,2002). In Britain, the aristocratic literary culture in the 17th century brought thedomestication into existence. Many translators and theorists advocated domestication,such as Denham, John Dryden and Alexander Fraser Tytler. In 1964, Nida became arepresentative of domestication by putting forward his famous conception of“function equivalence” or “dynamic equivalence”. According to Nida (Nida, 1969),the fluency, transparency and naturalness of the translated text must be attached themost importance. He also maintains that though there are cultural differences betweenlanguages, the purpose of translation is to transmit the communicative information tothe target language audience.
