1.1 An introduction to Mo Yan andHonggaoliang Jiazu
Born Guan Moye to a poor rural family in Shandong Prov ince in 1957, he adopted the ironic pen-name Mo Yan, which isan ancient literary expression for“do not speak”. He droppedout of school to work in a factory during the Cultural Revolutionand then he was accepted into the People’s Liberation Army in1976. In the army, he worked as a librarian and later took acourse in literature. He began writing in 1981 and entered theLiterature Department of the PLA Art Academy in 1984. Hispublished works include more than forty short stories and fivenovels, quite a number of which have been translated into Eng lish as well as other foreign languages. The early works recalledhis days as a peasant and worker. They were characterized bycoldness and restraint.Under the impact of modern Western Literature trends, mostof his recent works contain strong feelings and tense atmosphere.Nevertheless, his works are firmly rooted in Chinese oil. His writ ing has gained him a considerable audience-not only in China, but also overseas, where he is considered one of the most talent ed and interesting Chinese writers. Many researches have beendone, and some critics on his works have been given from vari ous perspectives. In the recent 20years, most critics have been fo cused on the art of his novels, the folk culture in his novels, therelationship between the seeking root culture and his novels, andthe detailed analysis on his works. Some of these papers are pub lished in journals.Mo Yan started his writing career in 1980s, and soongained a national-wide fame. Then he published HonggaoliangJiazu (1987; Eng. Red Sorghum, 1993), Tian Tang Suan Tai ZhiGe (1988; Eng. The Garlic ballads, 1995), Shisan Bu (1989; Eng.Thirteen Steps), Jiu Guo (1992; Eng. The Republic of Wine, 2000),Shifu Yue Lai Yue You Mo (Shifu, You’ll Do Anything for ALaugh, 2001), Feng Ru Fei Tun (Big Beasts &Wide Hips, 2003)and so on. Honggaoliang Jiazu published in 1987 is one of hismost famous works and was Mo Yan’s first novel translated intoEnglish. Before it was rendered into English, Zhang Yimou, Chi na’s famous director, made it into a movie. The movie Red Sor ghum got the winner of Silver Bear at the 1988 Berlin Film Festi val. It is because of the movie that the novel became well-known. This novel began as a short story published in 1986. Itwas so well received that later it was expanded into five chaptersand published as“a family saga”in 1987, by the People’s Liber ation Army Publishing House in Beijing. Mo Yan added furtherepisodes at the request of publisher, and published the novel inits entirety in 1989.
