Clive Staples Lewis (1898-1963) was a famous and distinguished Britishnovelist, broadcaster, poet, fantasy author, literary critic, lecturer, and Christiantheorist. Lewis began to gain publicrecognition during the 1930s, but he became an overnight celebrity in 1941, when aseries of BBC radio broadcasts made him a household name in England. During andafter World War II, he also published a highly distinguished series of books,including his celebrated cycle of children’s stories, The Chronicles of Narnia(1950-1956), which established his reputation throughout the English-speaking world.Altogether he published more than forty books in his lifetime, and, as a consequenceof his enduring popular appeal, more than twenty volumes of stories, poems,
essays,and letters have appeared since his death in 1963. With his gift for spiritual fable andfor finding the illuminating image, Lewis has not only survived his mid-centuryvogue but is now generally regarded as one of the most influential Christianapologists of the twentieth century.
