Chapter Two Functional Training of Bodies

The chief function of the disciplinary power is to ‘train’, rather than to select andto levy; or, no doubt, to train in order to levy and select all the more. It does not linkforces together in order to reduce them; it seeks to bind them together in such a wayas to multiply and use them. (Foucault 169) Training is a kind of technology thatimposes tasks on body and it is the major function of disciplinary power. It is to helpthe body become obedient, efficient and useful tools that can carry out its functionsfor which it is trained. From NBA dancers audition to the appearances, each NBAteam uses directly or indirectly one important avenue of discipline—training, which isa classic method. This persistent training intends to improve body so that it can bemore useful, functional and docile.Every year before the new basketball season begins, each NBA team willorganize the auditions during which various training practices are imposed on bodiesso as to better satisfy the specific needs of its team, for these attractive bodies areviewed as productivity and labor. Each NBA team trains bodies of these girls andchanges them into more perfect and more functional objects for the outside world.Through functional training, bodies are delicately trained or reshaped for thecommercial use and become productive and subjected subjects.

2.1 Physical Training
Being a qualified NBA cheerleader needs to have great physical strength. It’s atiring and energy-consuming job because “for the professional NBA cheerleaders, 90percent of their energy is consumed in the dance. They have to perform for at least sixtimes during each game and dancing in a home basketball game equals thirteen orfourteen hours of work”. (Wang Haiyan and Xu 218）Therefore, in order to keepenergetic state all the time and perform successfully on the basketball field, the NBAcheerleaders should not only accept physical training in auditions but also conductregular practices in their daily life after the fierce tryouts. This is to eliminate weakbodies and select the strong ones or train the vulnerable ones into powerful, dynamicand staminal tools for better services. The physical training, however, is not simply tomake bodies strong in some sense, it is to establish a kind of relationship and form adisciplinary mechanism inflicted on bodies.For example, in audition, candidates who have made the cut after the first fewrounds of the tryouts will enter the boot camp or the training camp for several days’training. In this boot camp, in addition to learning some new routines, theseparticipants have to accept physical training with high intensity to make sure that theyare fit enough on the basketball court. The boot camp is always held in a basketballplayground or a spacious training hall so that these candidates can have enough spacefor the training and learning, meanwhile, they can be easily watched.
