Chapter Four Progress and Ignorance: ModernThought and Traditional Education

4.1 Mill’s Philosophy on Education

Mill is a proponent of utilitarianism. He inherits Bentham’s utilitarian doctrineand revises and develops it. Thus he is considered as a master of utilitarian philosophy. And his philosophy involves many fields, including ethics, politics, economics, logic, religion, etc. Of course, education is also a major area of concern to him. Though Milldoes not receive formal education, he forms a unique insight into education. As it ismentioned above, on all moral issues, he regards utility as the ultimate appeal. On thataccount, Mill’s idea of education is based on utilitarian theory. And the education headvocates is utilitarian education.

Mill is quite concerned about education. He regards it as a tool for reformingsociety. As a result, in response to the current social situation in Britain, Mill proposeshis own educational ideas basing on utilitarian philosophy. Thus he applies the GreatHappiness Principle of utilitarianism into education field and views it as its basicprinciple. Consequently, he believes that the aim of implementing education is notonly to achieve personal happiness, but also to achieve the greatest happiness of themost people. And he emphasizes the important role of education to improve people’sintelligence and promote the welfare of the whole society. In Mill’s view, as a keyfactor influencing people’s character and ability, education can enhance people’sability to seek happiness in real life by cultivating noble character and trainingpeople’s intelligence. Moreover, not only does it encourage human development, butalso promotes social progress. Mill’s ideal society contains these characteristics thatare political democracy, economic prosperity and people’s happiness. At the sametime, he points out that “talents and knowledge being in a democratic society the onlymeans of rapid improvement in fortune, they will be, in the abstract at least, by nomeans undervalued” (Mill 1977: 180). Thus education as an important means ofimproving people’s intelligence and character is undoubtedly the ideal tool forpromoting social progress.

Chapter Five Conclusion

For comments on Jude the Obscure, Hardy makes some remarks on one or twoof them. He states that “Tragedy may be created by an opposing environment either ofthings inherent in the universe, or of human institutions” (Hardy, F 274). And fromthe analysis of Jude the Obscure, it can be drawn that the pro论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
