ying word for all the principal subdivisions ofgeography, because home,in the large sense,is physical, economic, psychological, and moral;it is the whole physical earth and a specific neighborhood;it is constraintand freedom”(Tuan 1989:99).It can be seen that the home plays an important role inpersonal growth.Home can also be a place of departure and escape, and home is alsoa place where people start their lives.Generally speaking, the external world of homeis characterized by its flatness and simplicity, while the inside world of the home isfeatured by its multi-layered sense and richness.

2.1.1 Mother’s Garden and Salon

Children develop a sense of dependence through the intimacy with adults, especially their mothers.Ayaana’s mother Munira has a garden where she grows herbsand flowers. And she excels at making rose perfume, rose water and rose oil.

In Escapism,Yi-fu Tuan(1998:63)contends that the garden is another intermediate landscape between nature and the metropolis.Although the word, garden, evokes nature at once, the garden itself is clearly a man-made thing. In China, onegenerally says‘build’a garden. In Europe, however, people say that they are‘planting’a garden. This difference in terminology suggests that the Chinese are more likely torecognize the artificial nature of the garden. The dominant thinking in China is thatman-made skills represent civilization, and there is nothing derogatory about the term.To Europeans, however, artificial techniques contained a strong pejorative connotation.Due to the fact that Europeans are deeply influenced by the Bible from an early age, whose stories of mankind taking place in the beautiful Garden of Eden before the Fallwere deeply ingrained in them,as well as by the idea of natural romance. In Europe, people originally grew plants around their houses for food and herbs,so as to meet theneeds of everyday life.In the early Middle Ages,Europeans combined what wasuseful with what was beautiful naturally in their gardens.

2.2 Residence for Chinese in the Past and at Present

Six hundred years ago,the Chinese who came to Pate Island prospered on theisland, leaving behind distinctive dome-shaped and crescent-shaped graves when theydied.Mzee Kitwana Kipifit,a Chinese visitor to the island,is interested in the tombshis ancestors left behind and used them as a medium to connect China and Africa.Ayaana, the protagonist of the novel,is given the chance to study in China on ascholarship and start a new life journey.Mzee Kitwana Kipifit, who arrives on theisland 600 years later, also finds residence here, where the past and present merge toform a circle.

2.2.1 Chinese Styled Tombs on Pate Island

In the novel, the heroine Ayaana is based on the story of Mwamaka Sharifu.Thegirl was helped by Li Xinfeng, who was a journalist at that time. Thanks to the help ofLi Xinfeng, the girl finally came to China to study Chinese medicine. After finish her study, she returned to Pate Island to serve the islanders.(Li Xinfeng 2013:198)In aninterview,Owuor said that there is very little reference is made to the past in TheDragonfly Sea.Because she thinks that the past is what is informing this newrelationship. The novel wants to talk about China’s increasing role in Africa,orSino-African relations. However, instead of China dominating Africa with the Beltand Road in hand,it appears that the reverse is true.
