4. Refinement and Sublimation


4.1. Basic Principles
Under the influence of Krashen's theory in SLA study, language leaching is like ahundred flowers in bloom. Teaching methods after 1980s that are limited in"communication", "dialogue" etc. haven't become systematic and have no noveltyvalue, people therefore have been the swing vote among various learning andteaching methods. With even' increment in our knowledge of foreign language study,there is a general awareness that the ubiquitous willingness to find the best way oflearning is unrealistic. Chomsky, who doomed audio-lingual leaching method, oncesaid, the chance of finding another learning method is very slim. The fundamentalcause of this phenomenon is the headway in language study, because we finally awarethat foreign language learning is no longer a flat issue that can be explained by asingle theory, and that it is a full rage of concepts that embrace neurology,cognition,linguistics, psychology, sociology, pedagogy and so on. Different individual shouldhave different learning methods; tactics vary in different learning stages; even at thesame stage, we'd better adjust our tactics accordingly as environment,hardware orsoftware devices, parters, materials change.

Principles in foreign language learning are so complicated that nobody can makeit clear absolutely; at the same time, they are also so simple that there is no need tomake it clear. Endless gramma exercises and linguistic analysis plunge students intothe dark depths of misery, for the most precious time for language learning is wastedand students' appetite for embracing a foreign language is spoiled. Although it isChinese educational system that determines the ways of English teaching andlearning in China, we still believe that educational system will make considerablemodification in the next episode.At present, linguists have reached an agreement on the existence of critical periodof first language, while the issue whether there is a critical period of second languageor foreign language will need to be further gone into. Just like what has beendiscussed above, linguists" viewpoints on “language is obtained by learning oracquiring” result in opposition conclusions in critical period hypothesis. However,thephenomenon that adult learns much more slowly than child in foreign languageenvironment is self-evident. Nowadays political, economic, cultural and eveninterpersonal communications between different nations are increasingly frequentunder the trend of globalization, so communicative skills, especially listening andspeaking skills, should be taken seriously.
