Introduction
Chapter One  Four Major Periods for Aussie English          
      As another young `melting pot' nation, Australia has been undergoing four major periods in creating new words, new expressions and new meanings of old words一Early Days, the Pastoral Era, the Goldrushes and the Modern Period.
1.1. Early Days
      When the penal settlement first landed at Port Jackson on 26 January, 1788, it  started the beginnings  of  contemporary  Australia.  Owing  to  the  great geographical differences between the new land and the old country, many words started to derive new meanings, like astronomical and agricultural expressions and the local place- names, fauna and flora  words gradually integrated into the English language during this period.
      It is really difficult for us to realize the isolation of the first settlers in this remote area. The most serious aspect of the settlers' isolation was uncertainty about food supplies. Attempts to grow food locally were not very successful. The seasons and climate were unfamiliar, the soil was sandy and poor, and the earth lacked the effect of the mulch. Most of the convicts were city people, and they wished some practical farmers to be sent to fill the absence. Later in 1788 a Government Farm was established with a hundred convicts and their officers at Rose Hill, a place about 24 kilometers west of Sydney Cove.
