摘要:本文以美国建筑师赖特的话语“建筑的真髓在于空间”开篇,探讨了空间的外在形式结构与内在的隐喻意义。
There is also perceptual space, the space that can be perceived or seen. To understand this, an example will be in a building with walls of glass, this perceptual space may be extensive and impossible to quantify. In the case of visual perceptual space, a single space can also have multiple interpretations and meanings on the perceptual level. This process of perceiving space routinely alters what the perceiver sees and interprets.
Related to perceptual space is conceptual space. This type of space can be defined as the mental map we have in our heads or the plan stored in our memory to serve as a medium or agency for the transmission of certain messages or ideas - concepts. Concepts that are successful are those that one can easily grasp in their mind and in which they can perceive easily with a kind of inevitability with no doubt. Such conceptual spaces can be considered to have a good concept.
The architect also creates and shapes behavioural space, or in other words, the actual space which we can move through and use. Architecture and interior spaces are powerful shapers of behaviour on different scales. Winston Churchill once said 'We shape our buildings and afterwards our buildings shape us.' (Roth, 2007)
One very good example to support this statement is the Houses of Parliament in Germany. When Parliament first begun to meet in the thirteenth century, it was initially given the use of rooms in the palace and later on moved into the palace chapel, a typical narrow and tall Gothic chapel with parallel rows of choir stalls on two sides of the aisle down the center. The members of Parliament were divided to sit in the stalls in two distinctive groups; one is the government body in power and the other usually the opposition members. During Parliament meetings, members from both parties have to take the brave and daring step of crossing the aisle to exchange political allegiance and views. This enforced behaviour has a negative impact on the overall operation of the government bodies as this form of meetings unintentionally made politicians from both sides to feel and sense hostility and unconsciously insinuated the perception of challenge.
After a massive fire in 1834, the Houses of Parliament had to be rebuilt after it was burnt down. The architectural Gothic form was followed but Churchill suggested that the rebuilding of the Parliament should be done with a fan of seats in a broad semicircle, similar to the legislative chambers in the United States and France. The notion of changing an environment and design in order to give it a different behavioural space would change the very nature of how parliaments operate. The English first started out shaping their architecture, and then that architecture in turn shaped English government and history. The Houses of Parliament were rebuilt with the revised layout after Churchill's persuasion. 'Space can determine or suggest patterns of behaviour and perceptions by its very configuration.' (Roth, 2007)
