Chapter One Task Description

1.1 Task Background

Calvin Smith,the client,is an English teacher from South Africa.He has beenstaying in China for three years.Because he likes Chinese culture very much,he wentto many cities and visited many places of interest during the past three years.

Moreover,this was the client’s first visit to Changchun,the provincial capital ofJilin Province in northeast China.In fact,this was his first visit to northeast China.Since Calvin expressed very explicitly to the author his special interest in the history,people and culture of northeast China,the author suggested that they should visit theNortheast Ethnic and Folk Museum in order to help him deeply understand thetraditional culture and customs of northeast China.Upon hearing the suggestion andher brief introduction to the museum,Calvin agreed without hesitation.Therefore,they decided to visit the Northeast Ethnic and Folk Museum on October 5th,2021.

The author provided Chinese-to-English interpreting for the client throughoutthe visit lasting for about 120 minutes and recorded the whole process.Bytranscribing the audio recording of the interpreting done that day,the author aims tomake a detailed analysis of the difficulties and problems that she encountered in thetask in order to find out whatever is worth studying in terms of guide interpretingstudies.

1.2 Task Requirements

The purpose of this tour guide interpreting task is two-fold.On the one hand,the interpreting enables the client to feel the long history and the unique culture of the ethnic groups living in northeast China while watching the exhibits in the museum;on the other hand,the interpreting helps the client better understand the culture andfolk customs of northeast China reflected in and hidden behind these exhibits.Therefore,this task mainly has the following four requirements.

First comes the requirement of an explicit interpreting goal,which is to help theclient better understand the history,culture and folk customs in northeast China.Because the museum is the largest in northeast China,with the most abundantexhibits,the client hopes to better understand the history and culture in northeastChina through the visit to the museum.Therefore,based on the interest of the client,the interpreter communicated with the museum tour guide and clarified that thepresentation had better center on the history,culture and customs of northeast China.On the part of the interpreter,she must also expand her knowledge reserve in a shortperiod of time,understand the history,culture and customs of northeast China,prepare culture-related glossary in advance,and strengthen cross-cultural awareness,so as to present the content to the client in a relatively satisfactory way,thusachieving the goal of interpreting.
