Chapter Two Process of Interpreting

2.1 Task Preparation

Preparing before interpreting is essential to a successful interpreting.Accordingto Pochhacker,“Preparation for an interpreting assignment is a crucial element ofQUALITY in all types of interpreting”(Pochhacker,2015:318).The interpreter isexpected to build up his conference-related terminological and thematic knowledgeand take every opportunity available to know the speaker and his audience(Zhang,2003(03):13).A successful interpreting task requires not only the interpreting abilityof the interpreter but also the full preparation on the part of the interpreter before theinterpreting task.Only when the interpreter is fully prepared can problems that mayoccur during the process be avoided as far as possible.This chapter is devoted tointroducing the preparation work done by the author before the interpreting practice.It mainly includes communication with the client,parallel text preparation andglossary establishment.

2.1.1 Communication with the Client

Before the tour,the author communicated with the client Calvin by phone andasked him what he expected to know about northeast China.Since Calvin isinterested in the history,culture and customs of northeast China,the author andCalvin planned to visit the Northeast Ethnic and Folk Museum.In fact,the NortheastEthnic and Folk Museum has four main exhibition areas,namely the AncientNortheast Ethnic and Folk Exhibition Area,the Modern Northeast Ethnic and Folk Exhibition Area,Changchun City Development History Exhibition Area and theNortheast Representative Businesses Exhibition Area.Because of the time limit,theauthor asked the client to choose three out of the four exhibition areas.The clientexpressed rather explicitly that Changchun City Development History ExhibitionArea didn’t interest him as much as the other three,so he decided to skip this one andspend most of his time visiting the other three exhibition areas,from which he couldlearn the most interesting and profound northeast culture.

2.2 Onsite Interpreting

On October 5th,2021,the author went to the museum with the client at 10:00a.m.Then,the author briefly introduced the form of interpreting and the tour route tothe client.After communicating with the museum tour guide and the client,the authortested her recording equipment to make sure it would work properly,and then shechecked the battery level,especially lest it could not last the whole visit.After gettingthe client’s and the guide’s permission,the author turned on her recording device,which was expected to work for about 120 minutes.

During the visit,the author began her interpreting immediately after the Chinesetour guide gave a pause.Every time when the author sensed that the content wasdifficult for the client to understand,she would explain it so that the client couldunderstand the meaning more clearly right away.In addition,whenever the clientasked questions during the visit,the author would translate the client’s Englishquestions into Chinese for the tour guide to answer.After the tour guide answered thequestions,the author would translate them into English for the client.
