l Theory Abroad
The multimodal theory has been studied by the scholars in the western country for many years. In the following section, researchers introduce the definitions of modality and multimodality, then origin of multimodal theory and application of multimodal theory are to be considered. The final part is the theoretical foundation of multimodal vocabulary teaching. With respecting to the definitions, Holsonova (1999) points out that we can not communicate with each other and grasp information quickly and efficiently in our daily life without using different modes. Multimodality participated in the activities when we also use of language, gestures, body movements in the communication. Compared with the traditional language symbols, Kress and Van Leeuween (2001) believe that mode refers to the various symbols used for communication and it can be achieved through variety of channels and medium, such as images, colors, music, technology and so on. In daily interpersonal activities, people use various resources, such as sound, movement, gesture and image for multimodal communication. Medium refers to tools and material in the process of communication. Multimodal discourse involves using various sensory such as hearing, vision and applying a variety of means (such as image, language, expression, sound, movement) and symbolic resources for communication discourse. Meanwhile, Bernsen (2002) points out that more than two single-modes express the meaning at the same time formed multimodal expressions. In his opinion, the mode is the way that the peoples’ sense organs interact with the outside world. When we involving a single organ in the communication, which is a single mode and when we involving more than one organ is called multimodality. He also says the interaction between senses of human and the sense of external environment called modality. According to O’Halloran (2004), the co-evolution of language with other semiotic modalities are probably marked with co-evolution between them which in turn intertwines with the large co-evolution of nature and cultures in the ecology of being human. Then, he comes up with his own opinion about multimodality. He says the mode is defined as all the channels and media during the communication.
