Chapter One Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
In order to keep up with the pace of the world, learning English well hasbecome a requirement. In the new era, under the guidance of the people-orientedconcept, educators and teachers have gradually paid more attention to the needs ofstudents with different scores and different social background at different levels, inthe aspects of the curriculum reform, textbook completion and teaching methods.
However, teachers often neglect the gender differences in English learning. Thenew curriculum reform requires the teachers to be oriented to all students, meet theneeds of every student, and make every student fully developed. The new compulsoryeducation law stipulates that “teachers should treat students equally in teachingprocess, take individual differences of students seriously, teach students according totheir aptitude, and promote the full development of students”. In a sense, it is also arequirement of “teaching according to their gender”. English teachers should payattention to the differences between boys and girls in physical and mentaldevelopment in the process of teaching, which is an objective existence. Thedifferences in physiology, Psychology and gender will affect the implementation ofthe educational process and the achievement of educational goals in all aspects.

1.2 Purpose and Significance of the Study
The thesis is about gender differences in junior high school students’ Englishlearning. It aims at finding whether gender differences influence the junior high school students’ English learning, exploring the causes of gender differences inEnglish learning and putting forward some suggestions so as to truly realizeindividualized teaching and develop the innate advantages of girls and maximizethe learning potential of boys to improve the quality of English teaching.
And the influence of gender differences on teaching is objective, especially onEnglish teaching. It is necessary to study the influence of gender differences onEnglish teaching.
First, studying gender differences helps to promote the development ofstudents’ personality and complement advantages of each other. Every student isnot the same. Different students have different levels. Students have differentstrengths and weaknesses. Teachers should be good at finding out the differencesamong students, especially among the students with poor performance, andencourage them to try their best to expand their advantages. Teachers shouldimplement reasonable differentiated instruction, actively develop students’potential and promote personal development. At the same time, teachers shouldhelp develop students’ strengths and make up their weaknesses, give full play totheir respective advantages, make up for their shortcomings, cultivate the commonexcellent quality of male and female students, make them get perfect and gooddevelopment, improve their respective English ability to the greatest extent, andimprove the quality of English teaching.
