Chapter 2 Literature Review


2.1 Definition of College English Classroom Environment
2.1.1 Definition of College English
In this research, college English is a compulsory foundation course for Non-Englishmajor undergraduate and college English teaching is an integral part of higher education. Itscourse contents are mainly divided into New Horizon College English (Reading and Writing),which is used in this classroom environment research, and New Horizon College English(Listening and Speaking), whose total class hour is from 144 to 266. College English teachinggoal is to help students establish a solid language foundation, grasp good language learningmethods, strengthen the autonomous learning ability, improve the comprehensive culturalquality, make them with strong English competence, especially listening and speaking ability,use English to do information exchange in an oral or writing way effectively, in order to adaptto the social development, economic development and the international exchange needs.


2.1.2 Definition of Classroom Environment Brought out by Foreign Scholars
In the middle 1930s,relevant research of psychologist K. Lewin and Murray (1938)made the start of classroom environment research. Later scholar did deep research into it fromdifferent level and point of view, getting a large amount of research achievements.Among such a great number of definitions of classroom environment, the much moreinfluential are as follows: 1) classroom environment is a learning area constituted by school,family and other material factors, represented by American education technology experts F. G.Knirk. He ever explicitly pointed out that classroom environment was a learning areaconsisting of school building, classroom, library, laboratory, playground, and learning spot ina family (F. G. Knirk, 1979); 2) classroom environment is a collection of all kinds of factors ina classroom, represented by famous Australian scholar Barry J. Fraser. He thought thatclassroom environment was classroom life situation consisting of classroom space, classroominterpersonal relationship between teachers and students, classroom life quality, andclassroom social atmosphere (Barry J. Fraser, 1986); 3) classroom environment is schoolatmosphere or classroom atmosphere, represented by psychologist Hawley. He thought thatclassroom environment was warm and safe classroom atmosphere able to stimulate students’creative thinking (Goldbecker Sh. S., 1976); 4) classroom environment is a learning placeconsisting of school environment, family environment and social environment, brought out inInternational Education Association;
