Chapter 4 Results and Discussions


4.1 The profile of grammatical competence acquired by the students
The present study demonstrates the statistic description of the currentgrammatical competence test and its three dimensions. The total scores of theirgrammatical competence which were calculated by summing up the scores of thegrammatical form, semantic meaning and pragmatic use indicate the generalgrammatical competence achieved by the participants.Generally speaking, as shown in Figure 4.1 attached in the Appendix 5, thenumber of the students in different segments of marks is described vividly and clearly.It is described that the result of the grammatical competence test appears a normaldistribution state. According to their scores, the number of the students from 40 pointsto 60 points is the most. The more specific and detailed information are presented inTable 4.1.As can be seen from the data in Table 4.1, the general grammatical competenceof the participants in Higher Vocational Colleges is not so satisfactory. The meanscore of grammatical competence is 48.55, which does not reach the half of the totalpoints. The Standard Deviation is 11.122, which means the levels of grammaticalcompetence acquired by the students are subject to wide range and large variation.

Conclusion


According to the results of the data and the discussions on the research questions,we draw the following conclusions: the general profile of grammatical competence of the students in VocationalColleges is not so good. They fail to master solid grammatical knowledge in terms ofgrammatical form and semantic meaning, and also demonstrate their low proficiencyin pragmatic use according to the results of the test. Moreover, the participants’grammatical competence is not developed at the same rate in terms of the threedimensions.From analyzing the items in grammatical competence test, besides their poorgrammatical competence, we also find some problems of grammatical competence.Though students in Vocational Colleges have experienced grammar learning in theirprevious study, their grammatical knowledge is fragmentary. They really do not havesolid grammatical knowledge including grammatical form and semantic meaning asEnglish majors. Besides, they do not know how to use some grammar pointsappropriately. Moreover, they tend to lack the awareness of grammar at discourselevel.
