As a branch of pragmatics, lexical pragmatics is an interdisciplinary subject composed of lexicology and pragmatics. It emerged at the end of the 20th century. The original concept on lexical pragmatics was conducted by McCawley (1978). He thinks that a lexical item and a syntactically complex equivalent of it may make different contributions to the interpretation of a sentence without making different contributions to its semantic structure. In 1998, Blunter, a famous linguistics professor at Humboldt University, published Lexical Pragmatics. The term ―lexical pragmatics‖ was formally proposed. Since then, he has published a large number of articles and conducted a series of studies on lexical pragmatics. In July 2000, with the 7th International Pragmatics Conference, lexical pragmatics was established as a new linguistic discipline. In December 2003, the 8th National Conference on Pragmatics was held at Guangdong University of Foreign Studies. Wilson (2004), one of the founders of Relevance Theory, delivered a speech and published Relevance, word meaning and communication: The past, present and future of lexical pragmatics after the meeting. It has significantly promoted the development of lexical pragmatics in China. After that, at each conference, the related topics will be discussed by scholars at home and abroad. (Chen, 2005)  

The most important reason why lexical pragmatics emerged and developed is that the past research on words is not enough to explain the new problems and phenomena discovered by scholars. Both traditional lexicology and lexical semantics generally study static words, lexical composition and the evolution of word meaning in a language. Most of the word meanings have undergone an evolution from arbitrariness to convention. 

2.2 Methodology

Based on the above literature review and theoretical framework, this thesis will conduct an in-depth analysis of contextual antonyms from the perspective of lexical pragmatics with Relevance Theory. The data collection and data analysis of this thesis will be explained as follows. 

2.2.1 Research Questions

Based on the selected data, this thesis will analyze the contextual antonyms from the perspective of lexical pragmatics. The following three questions will be discussed and answered.

What are the characteristics of contextual antonyms? What is the pragmatic enrichment of contextual antonyms? What are the functions of contextual antonyms? 

2.2.2 Research Methods

This thesis uses qualitative analysis and exemplification to analyze and summarize the selected real data in the discussion process. Qualitative analysis is a subjective analysis method. This thesis focuses on the qualities of contextual antonyms. According to the theoretical framework, the characteristics, pragmatic enrichment and functions of contextual antonyms are analyzed. Thus, qualitative analysis can be used. Moreover, typical and representative examples are selected to argue to prove the correctness of the points, which can make the points more convincing. Thus, exemplification can be used.
