Chapter 2 Literature Review
2.1 Introduction of PP
PP, as proposed by Kumaravadivelu (1994, 2001, 2003, & 2006) emerged as a response to acall for the most optimal way of teaching English that will free itself from the method-basedrestriction.
2.1.1 How to understand postmethod
In all of Kumaravadivelu's works and papers, actually, there is not a definitely cleardefinition of postmethod. The concept of postmethod is nothing but a word as opposed tomethod(approach). In fact, postmethod is equivalent with PP, or postmethod is the abbreviationof PR When the word of postmethod was used firstly in 1994 in the postmethod condition:(E)merging strategies for second /foreign language teaching, as we can see, it is accompaniedclosely with "condition". That is to say, "postmethod condition" is used as a whole that isinseparable. In this paper from the beginning to the end, Kumaravadivelu does not tell us exactlywhat the postmethod is. Instead, he first of all makes an explanation of the meaning of methodby citing Mackey(1965). Then he starts to interpret the postmethod condition.
2.1.1.1 The definition of method
In order to get a better understanding of postmethod, it is useful to look closely at thedefinition of method (confining to language teaching only). The term method, as currently usedin the literature on second and foreign language (L2) teaching, does not refer to what teachersactually do in the classroom; rather, it refers to established methods conceptualized andconstructed by experts in the field.For understanding the constituents of method, Anthony (1963) proposed a three-waydistinction: approach, method, and technique. He defined approach as "a set of correlativeassumptions dealing with the nature of language and the nature of language teaching andlearning. It describes the nature of the subject matter to be taught. It states a point of view, aphilosophy, an article of faith . . ." (Antony, 1963:63-64). Thus, an approach embodies thetheoretical principles governing language learning and language teaching.
