In the first place, socially and culturally, Chinese translations of famous foreign literaryworks have been widely circulated in China and have been sold nationwide for a long time, butforeign translations of Chinese literary works have not been propagated and accepted so welloverseas. For the continuous enhancement of its comprehensive national strength and theincreasingly important role of China in the international area, Chinese culture could exertgreater influence and have a more eminent identity overseas. It has always been an importantissue for China to deepen cultural exchanges with foreign countries, to promote the externaldissemination of its outstanding national cultures, to enhance the international influence ofChinese culture, and to improve the cultural self-confidence of the Chinese nation. Therefore,translation of Chinese literary classics, as an important means of external communication anddissemination of Chinese culture, deserves more academic attention.

What is more, in terms of academic research, many linguists agree that Chinese is alanguage with a discourse tendency, but the fact is that discourse or textual theories, such ascohesion theory (Halliday & Hasan, 1976) and thematic progression pattern (Danes, 1974), aremostly put forward based on the results of lexical and syntactic research on Indo-Europeanlanguages. These theories as the framework for studying Chinese discourse or comparingChinese and English discourses regardless of typological differences may not be alwaysapplicable to the Chinese language and Chinese-English translation. Therefore, based onlinguistic facts, a thorough comparative analysis of Chinese and English texts can be conductedfrom a new perspective and further applied to translation practice, and this thesis holds that topic chain is a proper starting point.

1.2 Research Significance

In recent years, there has been a certain amount of research on topic chain both in English and Chinese from different schools in the academia, offering insights for future studies.However, there are few discussions on the English translation of Chinese texts from theperspective of the topic chain, so further research is needed in this respect. And if one wants tocarry out the study related to topic chain, it is a must to make discussions of subject and topicin the first place, which highly coincide in topic chain. The relationship between them iscomplicated and messy, and they are also the cornerstone of the construction of a topic chain inthe meantime.

In view of this, this thesis aims to analyze the differences and relationships between topicand subject in the first place, and then make a contrastive analysis of topic chain and textualorganization between Chinese and English to make a profound understanding of theconstruction mechanism of topic chain and the access between subject and topic, attempting topropose new translation model, principles and strategies from the perspective of topic chain,and finally applies it to the practice of Chinese-English text translation.
