rotection to him. However, there finally comes an encounter between him and his father, from which scene it is learnt that Hareton is deserted by his father even early on in his childhood days.
At the age of five, after Nelly’s leave for Thrush cross Grange following Cathy who marries Lonton, Hareton is totally exposed to the violence and cruelty at Wuthering Heights. His own father and Heathcliff play roles of oppressors over Hareton. Heathcliff, having been despised by Hindley who then thinks him as an usurper of his father, Mr. Eearnshaw’s love, seeks to pay him back by ill treating his son Hareton and targets at everyone about him. And Hareton no doubt is the subject Heathcliff can take vengeance on. All this can be shown vividly in the encounter of Hindley and Hareton during which he mistakenly saves Hareton’s life. That makes Heathcliff terribly sad on discovering what a good deed he has done accidentally. After Nelly has moved to Grange, Hareton is pitiably left to his fate, and fully lost into the evil hands of Heathcliff. He takes liberty to do whatever pleases his mind, reducing Hareton to a degrading position of brutality. Hareton whose character is soon twisted and turned into evilness, he hanging puppies, having mercy on no living things. After Hindley is dead, all the property of the ancient house comes into the control of Heathcliff, Hareton is accordingly become a farm boy, doing hard work for his pay, deprived of all the chances of being educated. He is the sacrifice of the hatred Heathcliff shares towards his father. The conflicts of the first generation keep on being acted by the second generation. Hareton is both mentally and physically changed in a negative way as he is growing up. Strangely, Hareton enjoys Heathcliff’s company and his treatment; he loves Heathcliff better than anyone else.

Also owing to her, he is restored into the position and class he should belong to. You can say love’s power triumphs. Catherine’s decency, pride, gentleness are all out of place at Wuthering Heights as she first sets her steps there. Yet her innocence and beauty is impressed upon Hareton’s mind, thus motivating him to study to be good in the hope that he could be a match to the second Catherine. The ecstasy of love for little Catherine rouses his noble instincts, dispelling and improving his stubbornness and roughness belonging to the former self. As to Heathcliff, deeply involved in the reverie of his long lost love, he is unable to notice all those goings-on around him. In addition, the very resemblance that Hareton and Catherine have about the dead Cathy makes him haunted by the living images of Cathy while he himself is declining phisically. And a new Hareton is seen coming back into the ownership of Wuthering Heights and into the possession of its property. An infamous and unwelcome Heathcliff is dead, another Heathcliff begins to live. “The ancient stock of the Earns haw are restored to their rights②”, it suddenly becomes possible at Wuthering Heights, as if for the first time in human history, that one generation will not be doomed to repeat the tragic errors of its parents. Suddenly, childhood is past; it goes back to a gothic romance and sad legend, a “
