Introduction

1.1 Harriet Jacobs and Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl

Harriet Jacobs(1813-1897)was a great African American writer and abolitionist.As a writer,she wrote down her experiences as an enslaved person to fight againstslavery and reveal the sufferings of enslaved women.Her only work,Incidents in theLife of a Slave Girl,was considered as her autobiography and enjoyed an excellentreputation.It was the first long slave narrative written by women and the first tochallenge the dominant position of the male slave narrative.As an abolitionist,she didmuch relief work and established The Jacobs School.She helped the Black Civil Warrefugees in Alexandria,Virginia,and Savannah,Georgia.In 1863,she madeAlexandria the center of her relief activity.With Julia Wilbur,the teacher,feminist,and abolitionist,Jacobs disturbed the blanket and clothes to the refugees to help them.At that time,Virginia had prohibited teaching blacks to read and write.Jacobssupported the black community in finding a new school to teach blacks for free.Herdaughter Louisa Matilda had been trained as a teacher and came to Alexandria.Theyopened the Jacobs School in 1864,aiming to develop blacks’respect for their race.In1865,Jacobs followed the call of the New England Freemen’s Aid Society and cameto Savannah,Georgia.She was asked to help instruct the freemen in Georgia.Shedistributed clothes,opened a school,and planned to start an orphanage and an asylumfor older adults.At the end of 1867,she traveled to London to raise funds for anorphanage and home for the aged in Savannah.However,thanks to the anti-blackterror in Georgia by the Ku Klux Klan and other groups,the projects of opening anorphanage and asylum were impossible.The money Jacobs collected was then givento the New York Friends asylum fund.Jacobs then moved to Washington,D.C.in1877 and worked on civil rights efforts.She helped establish the National Associationof Colored Women.

Incidents in the life of a slave girl is regarded as the first female slave narrative.It records the life of enslaved people and reveals the cruelty of slavery frankly anddirectly.Its abundant academic values attract the interests of scholars abroad and inChina.

1.2.1 Studies abroad
