Impact and Challenges for Sustainable Development: A Case Study of Lahore, Pakistan”. This aricle was also published in “Archnet-IJAR, International Journal of Architectural Research”
The main focus of this article is to provide a historical as well as a present account of the dynamics and effects of gated communities, considering the city of Lahore as the main example.
The article starts with providing us an insight into the basic concept of a ‘gated community' i.e. the eras of the gated countries, gated cities and the recent gated neighborhoods. it is followed by the discussion on how the use of gates was availed in the medieval era as well as in the time of the Holy Prophet (PBUH). Then a vast detail is provided on the walled city of Lahore. The author here discusses how gradually the gated regions have been segregated from the urban regions and are experiencing many socio-economic problems. The writers then compare how the concept of gated societies has fared in Pakistan and the more developed countries. They say that this idea of gated communities may be beneficial economically for a single sector of the population, but the damage it does socially, that is it doesn't allow people to unite as one is devastating. Finally a list of solutions to this issue is given.
The article raises an issue which has become quite significant in the recent era, especially in our country. The gated-community concept is still very much intact here, most strongly in Lahore. The articles itself is well written. The authors have presented the ideas in quite a logical order. The topic is also very relevant, as the segregations of such kind as an obstacle to growth and prosperity of a country. The comparison of gated communities in the US and Pakistan shows a sharp contrast .the authors there clearly explain how the US can benefit from such gated societies but the situation in Pakistan(Lahore) is quite questionable. The authors have also made sure that the issue being discussed is relevant to the current era. They have done this by first going through the idea of gated countries and gated cities and eventually coming to the main point that is of the gated regions within a city. However, the article is certainly weakened by the lack of interviews and surveys directly taken from the gated areas of the Lahore city. This is one aspect which should have been taken into account and the writers shouldn't have relied on the common view of the public on the issue. Overall, the article can be said to be quite informative and even a try at giving people the universal message of unity.
