Chapter Four: Analyses of Cultural Elements of Senior High School English Textbooks


4.1 The Aims of Cultural Consciousness
The Standard indicates clearly that the culture mainly refers to the history, geography, localcustoms and practice, traditions, way of life, literature, art, code of conduct, and values ofEnglish countries. The contact and understanding of English countries’ cultures is good for theusing and understanding of English, for deep recognition of domestic culture and forcultivation of world consciousness (Educational Ministry, 2001:25).The Standard requires students to attain level seven and level eight when they graduatefrom senior high schools The textbooks are divided into eightvolumes, and there are six modules in each volume. It is demanded that students will achievethe requirements of level seven after finishing the first five volumes. Then students canachieve the requirements of level eight after finishing the last three volumes. There are nineparts in nearly every module ----- Introduction, Reading and Vocabulary, Grammar, Listeningand Speaking, Function and Everyday English and Writing and Cultural Corner. The series oftextbooks also contain students’ textbooks, teachers’ Reference books and their exercise books.The teaching aims of these textbooks are: first, to consolidate and broaden students’ basicknowledge; second, to develop students’ listening, speaking, reading and writing abilities;third, to cultivate their comprehensive application ability of language. In the process oflearning, their minds, emotional attitudes, learning strategies and cultural consciousness areall developed and the students will form correct views of life and improve their own qualities.My thesis chooses the eight volumes as the research objectives.

Conclusion


With the help of the textbooks and analytic data, I can summarize the advantages anddisadvantages of the English textbooks. Generally speaking, the cultural contents of thetextbooks are very rich and overall and they are basically consistent with the requirements andaims of cultural consciousness in the Standard. Here are their merits.Firstly, the cultural themes are quite extensive and various and five cultural elements are allmentioned in the textbooks. Secondly, the native language culture is particularly outstanding,which caters to the tenth point of level 7 of cultural aims. Next, the proportion of internationaltarget language culture is not small, including many topics, such as science, disaster, natureand internet and so on. It can cultivate fully students’ global consciousness and strengthentheir sense of responsibility. Finally, in the whole textbooks, communicative culture is themain guide with assistance of knowledge culture, which lets students know and understandthe cultural background of the foreign language in a broad way.However, a coin has two sides.
