Presentations:
The
dissertation presentations are compulsory and should follow the following format:
1. You will have 10 minutes each—5 minutes for presentation followed by 5 minutes discussion and comment
2. The presentation should either use overhead transparencies or use Powerpoint or pdf and a data projector.
3. You must identify the title of your proposed research, the research objective, the data required and the computing/ statistical tools required. Eg. EVIEWS.
4. The Research Objective should be briefly expanded into a justification of why you want to study this question- why is it important followed by a short description of what you intend to do.
5. One slide should explain the literature in which your research is embedded.
Supervision:
The following supervision arrangements may seem tough but are determined to ensure that each student has an equivalent input from their supervisor and that the dissertation is in fact the student’s own work. Once you have read them, a little reflection might suggest these rules are sensible and I can assure you that years of experience have shown they work well in allowing your potential to be properly reflected in the dissertation you finally present. The purpose of the dissertation is to develop your capacity for independent research and this is what employers want.
You have now been allocated a supervisor for your dissertation and it is up to you to make contact with them NOW.
1. You can expect one hour of contact with your supervisor before the end of this term (June) and there can be no expectation that you be able to see them in person after that time.
2. The supervisor should be used to determine the initial topic and guidance on the literature, data and the feasibility of the proposed topic of research. Once started the dissertation should be entirely the student’s own work. Some guidance from the supervisor may be required in the event of a major issue arising.
3. Any extensive or additional support provided by the supervisor beyond that indicated above must be noted when the dissertation is marked and will be taken into account in the grading of the dissertation.
4. The supervisor will read and comment on one draft of the dissertation and only one draft—the penultimate draft is a good idea leaving plenty of time for changes to be made. No extensions will be granted unless there are truly exceptional circumstances such as medical.
5. The supervisor will not rewrite or correct the English of the dissertation and if the English is poor then you may need to seek support from the language services of the University.
