CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION

1.1 Research Background

As an essential language skill,writing plays an indispensable part in people’sdaily life.In the field of language learning,writing is perceived as an integratedability,which involves other expressive and comprehensive skills.Promoting writingability is conducive to promoting learners’overall language competence.Hence,having a good grasp of English writing is of great necessity and importance forstudents.The quality of English writing is evaluated by grammatical accuracy,lexicalcomplexity,syntactic complexity and textual coherence.Textual coherence is a veryimportant factor to contribute to the syntactic structure and the whole text,which is avital feature of high-quality composition(Liu,2016).

However,in most cases,English teachers mainly focus on the accurate use ofgrammar,the completeness of content and variety of expressions when they evaluatestudents’writing.Little attention is given to the structure and coherence of writing.Numerous studies have shown that there are many salient issues and challenges inwriting coherence to be solved in English writing teaching.Cheng and Wang(2004)claim that although students’compositions have no obvious grammatical errors,theirwritings are still incoherent and incompact.The main reason for the lack of coherenceis that students fail to reasonably and effectively organize and arrange the clauserelations in their writing,which is manifested in the lack of connection betweensentences,the omission or misuse of cohesive devices,topic dissociation and orderinversion.According to Bai’s(2019)study,students seem to have written correctsentences that follow grammatical rules,but these sentences in the written text are notsemantically coherent and logical enough.The logical coherence in English sentenceshas significant correlation with English writing proficiency.

1.2 Significance and Purpose

The main purpose of this research is to investigate the effects of clause relationanalysis teaching on coherence in students’English writings.This research has boththeoretical and pedagogical significance.For the theoretical significance,as the basisof text construction,the clause relation might be rightfully considered as the center oflanguage research.However,it seems that such research has rarely been seen in China,though discourse analysis has become one of the major linguistic attractions in thepast decades.Many researchers abroad have studied on definition,classification and analytical methodology of clause relation(Winter,1977;Hoey,1983;Proctor,1987;Halliday&Hasan,1989).However,the current research about clause relation at homehas been rare(Kan&Jiang,2004;Cheng,2005;Yang,2011;Liu,2020).Moreover,some of the existing studies are mainly journal papers,focusing on the analysis andcomparison of the clause relation between English and Chinese,but few study writingcoherence and writing teaching from the perspective of clause relation.In addition,most of the research subjects are college students or English majors,and relativelyfew middle school students.Therefore,this study intends to focus on the juniormiddle school students and adopt clause relation analysis in English writing teachingto explore the effects on coherence of students’writings,which to some extentsupplements the existing论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
