Chapter OneIntroduction

1.1 Gurnah and Paradise

Gurnah was born in Zanzibar.He is an African American British writer and alsoa Tanzanian writer.He left Zanzibar in 1967 and arrived in Britain as a refugee in1968.Later,Gurnah lived in the United Kingdom for a long time and received hisdoctorate from the University of Kent.He was a professor of literature at KentUniversity until his retirement.The novel Paradise not only follows the tradition ofsetting the story in Zanzibar,but also surpasses the previous novels with satire.As arefugee who emigrated to Britain,his yearning for his hometown and the sadness ofbeing alone in a foreign country prompted Gurnah to reflect on many things that hadnot been considered before.Some people once wanted to label Gurnah as a postcolonial literature,but he disagreed with it.He said that“labeling will mask therichness of writers”.Nevertheless,it is not difficult to see that most of Gurnah’s worksfocus on the theme of refugees.His works mainly describes the living conditions ofthe colonial people,identity,ethnic conflicts and historical writing,etc.The livingconditions of the post-colonial era presented by him are considered to have importantsocial and practical significance.Gurnah has published ten novels and some shortstories.The chaos of refugees runs through his works,and he portrays the plight ofpeople looking for themselves with the most authentic description.The most famousnovel is Paradise in 1994,which was shortlisted for Booker Prize and WhitberryBook Award.


1.2 Literature review

With the announcement of the winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2021,Gurnah is known by the majority of readers,and his works are soon be introduced andpublished in various countries.His multiple identities and unique writing themesattract the majority of scholars to study.However,the research situation is different.The research on Gurnah abroad has a wide scope,rich perspectives and a long timespan.Compared with foreign scholars,the domestic research is slightly inferior,but inrecent years,it also shows a trend of increasing year by year.

1.2.1 Studies abroad.

After integration and refinement,it is found that Gurnah has accepted diversifieddevelopment in the new era,and there have been a considerable number of researcharticles.Through the analysis of relevant papers,it is found that many articles havedeeply discussed Gurnah’s works from different perspectives,such as diasporicwriting perspective,comparative research perspective,post-colonial perspective andso on.

2.1 Cities under colonial rule

The background of the story takes place in Zanzibar,which is located in the eastof Africa.In addition to its geographical significance,Zanzibar also represents theSwahili culture in the coastal areas of East Africa.It is a small island independent ofthe African continent.It used to be a necessary place for Indian Ocean trade.It is thegathering place of Swahili culture.Here,you can see the medieval buildings inEurope,the temples in Islam,and even the bathrooms in the Middle East style.
