Chapter 1 Literature Review
There is no controversy over the belief that lexical chunks are widely spread in natural language of English. According to some estimation made by Erman and Warren (2000: 29), at least 1/3 to 1/2 of the adult native English language is made up of lexical chunks. The wide spread of lexical chunks and the edges of it attract abundant attention from a great deal of researchers. The research focus shifts from the definition of lexical chunk, the classification of it and the function of it theoretically to its application into English language skills development. Recently, the ardor for its application to English teaching in classroom has reappeared since Lewis’ great work The Lexical Approach: State of ELT and a Way Forward was published in 1993.
1.1 Theoretical Study of Lexical Chunks
To have a more comprehensive knowledge of lexical chunks, researchers have tried to explore the property of it from a variety of perspectives such as social interaction, psycho linguistics and recognition etc. Wray (2000: 473) asserts that lexical chunks have two main functions. One is that it can “save precious processing resources.” The other is that it can be used to achieve interactional functions. That is to say lexical chunks can be used to express greeting, thanking and apologizing on the one hand and on the other hand, it “reflects our need to change our physical world through the actions of another person” Wray (2000:474). Lexical chunks which are fixed expressions to some extent could make contributions to the expression of certain pragmatic functions. These findings suggest that the acquisition of lexical chunks may facilitate the process of information and accelerate the fluency of oral English. Jiang (2003b: 84
