Chapter I Introduction
1.1 Definition of Chinglish     
Chinglish is usually produced by Chinese people in Chinese-English translation and also called“Chinese English”.It is a combination of“Chinese”and“English” and causes communication between Standard English speakers and Chinglish users breakdown.Taking a Chinese sign in an airport“非紧急情况请止步”for example, the equivalent English version below it is“no entry on peacetime”.It may make English native speakers puzzled.Actually“Emergency Exit”could make this Chinese sign sense.
At home and abroad,many teachers and scholars have noticed the existence of Chinglish and the studies of it are scattered in books or articles.However,because of its unsystematic and unsteady nature the term“Chinglish”has been defined differently by many scholars in light of their own understanding.From the encyclopedia on the internet，Wikipedia,“Chinglish is a portmanteau of the words Chinese and English and refers to spoken or written English which is influenced by Chinese.At the most fundamental level,Chinglish is bad English printed or spoken by Chinese people.”At abroad,the American author of The Translator’s Guide to Chinglish,Joan Pinkham who has been working in China as a translator and polisher for many years,points out in her book:“Chinglish,of course,is that misshapen, hybrid language that is neither English nor Chinese but might be described as ‘English with Chinese characteristics’.”(Pinkham,2007)British famous linguist and educator L.G.Alexander(Alexander,1995)presented his view on Chinglish: Chinglish is the version of English that reflects their(Chinese people’s)own culture…and if I,as a native speaker of English,were to learn Chinese,I would never think,speak and write as a Chinese do.I would always speak Engchin.”At home in 1989,Professor Deng Yanchang gave the definition of Chinglish as “Chinglish is speech or writing in English that shows the interference of influence of Chinese.Some sentences may be little or more than word for word translation of Chinese expressions.Chinglish may be grammatically correct,but the choice of words or phrases and the manner of expression do not conform to Standard English usage.Although understanding may not be a problem,Chinglish is unacceptable.” (Deng&Liu,1989)Another definition is proposed by Li Wenzhong(Li,1993).He considered Chinglish as a kind of misshaped English.It does not conform to the normative English expressions and appears when Chinese learners of English are influenced by Chinese through imposing the Chinese grammatical rules and idiomatic expressions into their English expressions.Li’s explanation of Chinglish is similar to that of Lin Qiong(Lin,2001):Chinglish is the misshaped English.It emerges when Chinese people,who are subject to the interference of Chinese thinking and relevant culture background,apply the rules of Chinese language into English expression.In 2003 another definition is put forward by Li Shaoming.He proposed that Chinglish is Chinese-like English in diction and in structure.It may result from poor English,bad habit of Chinese writing,or from uncritical way of thinking and writing in a Chinese context.
