A.Holy Body and Belief in True ChristThe first volume of The Faerie Queene has profound significance for it is amicrocosm of the entire epic.The poet named this book The Legend of the Knight ofthe Red Cross or of Holinesse,the title implies its connection to faith and religion,andSpenser embodied the highest Christian virtues in the holy body.

The Christian doctrine of original sin states that man is born sinful,that humannature is born evil,and that man must therefore turn to goodness in order to have achance at salvation.Faith,doing good works,and abstinence for the atonement of sinsare practical and feasible.And religious ascetic literature considers carnal desire to bean evil force.The dominant ideology of the Renaissance was humanism,whichadvocated that human beings face life positively and believe in the power of humanbeings,thus shifting the focus of faith from God to human beings,and the positive andopen humanists preached the enjoyment of a good life and advocated realistic livingand enjoyment against asceticism and eschatology,giving full recognition to humannature and natural requirements.This trend,while liberating human nature,was also awake-up call for Spenser.The enjoyment of human nature inevitably posed a challengeto moderation and eventually led to the degradation of human nature through greed.The desire for pleasure leads to its degradation.Thus,in the above context,Spenseruses chastity,one of the seven virtues,to teach that people should be rational abouttheir desires,apply moderation to overcome the possibility of depravity,and teachhuman nature to avoid ugliness and promote goodness.
