On the one hand, the classification of conceptual metaphors is notreasonable or practical. Scholars haven't come to a common standard of classification yet.On the other hand, given to that political discourses are very complex, which are affectedby many factors such as culture, historical background, social and economic conditions,and individual habits of speakers, there is much room for us to conduct studies onconceptual metaphors in political discourses focusing on the effects caused by the factorsmentioned above.

 

1.2 The significance of the research 本调查的意义
Every President hopes to win a great amount of support from his people, and toreceive the public's recognition, either he is elected in times of economic crisis or periodsof prosperity. Then delivering the presidential inaugural address is a perfect opportunityfor a newly-elected President to spread his political views and beliefs, to make hisprinciples and policies come to light to the public and to convince the general populaceto accept and support him. The speaker knows that if he could maneuver or confine whatis probable in language, he could manewer or confine what is probable in thought(Wilson 2001:15). So politicians can get some inspirations of how to make an appeal tothe crowd for upholding them and their government, and how their principles andpolicies can win wide support from the analyses of the presidential inaugural address. Ithas long been a hot subject for politicians, sociologists, historians, and linguists. Andlinguists have already done a number of researches on its lexical features, grammaticalfeatures, and rhetorical features. Many studies have revealed that politicians resort tolanguage skills in their speeches to achieve their goals, and metaphor is a vital languageskill that is adopted frequently to serve their purposes effectively, since metaphor iscomprehensible, vivid, convincing, and encouraging.However, most of the current studies fail to make a reasonable classification or justgive a general description of the flinctions of the conceptual metaphors adopted inauthentic materials, besides, quite a few studies analyze the effect of economicconditions on choices and uses of metaphors.Under such a circumstance, this thesis attempts to promote and put into practice amodified standard of classification of conceptual metaphors basing on Lakoff andJohnsen's conceptual metaphor theory and improvements made by other previous studies,and then on the basis of the results of that classification carry out a contrastive studyfrom a diachronic perspective on the conceptual metaphors used in American presidentialinaugural addresses delivered under different economic situations so as to arrive at acomparatively objective and helpful conclusion on the effects that the economicenvironment has on the uses of metaphors.We have noticed that economy is a very important factor that affects every aspect ofour life.
